Temperatures are freezing. Since early this morning the Mosel is completely covered by a layer of ice. The individual sheets of floating ice that had formed during the last couple of days have joined and created a continuous layer. Since the ice prohibits the locks from opening ships are not allowed to sail, which in turn allows the ice layer to grow unhindered. Although the ice is not thick enough to walk or skate on, the thought of that makes the cold a little bit more pleasent.
Another thing that makes us smile is the discussion about climate change. A short streak of cold does mean global warming has stopped. Winegrowers are used to think in longer periods. And our experience tells us that this very cold winter does not contradict the steady warming of our planet.
